Meet the Italian ‘Fruit Detective’ Who Investigates Centuries-Old Paintings for Clues About Produce That Has Disappeared From the Kitchen Table, by Mark Schapiro

In this piece for the Smithsonian magazine, Mark Shapiro follows Isabella Dalla Ragione, who researches Renaissance paintings to discover and identify ancient foods through her organisation, Archeologia Arborea. She aims to help farmers and governments worldwide in preserving and growing those forgotten plants. It’s genuinely fascinating.

How Climate Change Is Killing Cities, by Eve Andrews

You might have seen recent images of violent floods in Valencia, Spain, which destroyed entire neighbourhoods. This event reminds me of this article by Eve Andrews for the Atlantic. The piece underlines that, despite cities being de-facto extreme environments damaging our mental health and general well-being, destructive events in urban environments activate feelings of Solastalgia (mourning of nature), resulting in more climate awareness and grief than for natural environments, as they directly reveal the fragility of homes, loss of social cohesion, community and identity to people.
